Best Remedy for Feline Joint Health
Cosequin -- now in an 80-count bottle -- is the #1 veterinarian recommended treatment for joint health for cats (based on several surveys), and is suitable for economical long-term maintenance of joint health. Made by Nutramax Laboratories, Cosequin is the slightly less powerful "over-the-counter" sister product to Dasuquin for Cats which can only be sold by a vet. Cosequin and Dasuquin are presecribed for cat joint problems including arthritis, swollen joints, surgerical recovery, and general preventative maintanence.Â
Some veterinarians also recommend Cosequin to help support urinary bladder health. The inner lining of the bladder wall is protected by a layer, which contains some of the same compounds as are found in cartilage. This layer prevents urine and the waste products contained within it from seeping into and damaging the lining. Since the low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate found in Cosequin is available to more than just cartilage cells, the bladder may use it to help support this protective layer.Â
Cosequin (pronounced coh-seh-kwin) comes as powder in a little capsule which you empty into your kitty's food to ensure you give an accurate amount. We give the contents of the capsules mixed with a small amount (e.g., a big teaspoon) of super-tastey special wet food to ensure the one who needs it eats the entire amount, to be sure he gets the full dose. If your cat eats dry food, the food may be moistened with a small amount of water so that the powder sticks.Â
Cosequin may be given once or twice a day depending on your cat’s weight, feeding schedule, and joint health situation. Each box contains 80 sprinkle capsulesÂ
Dosage
- Initial period of 4-6 weeks:Â
Under 10 pounds - 1 capsule sprinkled on food daily
Over 10 pounds - 2 capsules sprinkled on food daily
- Long-term
Once the desired response is obtained, capsules may be administered every other day to maintain your cat. Number of capsules administered may be increased at any time depending on your cat’s needs. Â
